Friends of Council Grove Public Library
The Council Grove Friends of the Library was formed over twenty five years ago to assist the Library with funding or volunteers if needed. The membership fees are: $5.00 for an individual, $10.00 for a family, $20.00 if you wish to be a contributing member (you join for one year which begins January 1), and $100.00 for a lifetime member. Gail Daugherty is the current president of the Friends Group.
We meet on the second Monday of each month, except for the months of June or December, at 10:30 am in the kitchen of the Council Grove Public Library. You are welcome to attend any or all of our meetings.
We pay for the Talk About Literature in Kansas (T.A.L.K.) program which is sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council. Each year we pick a topic from their provided list and have book discussion programs in August, September, October, and November at 7:00 pm at the Library. The Friends provide light refreshments for these programs.
In November, the Friends have a free soup and cookies luncheon near Veterans Day to honor the veterans who attend, which is open to the community. We serve chili and a variety of soups and homemade cookies with beverages. Our Friends group serves the luncheon from 11:30 am – to 1:30 pm in the back meeting room of the Library.
Our annual book sale is our main yearly fundraiser for the Friends group. People from the community and surrounding area donate books, DVDs, and audio books throughout the year and the Library weeds various sections each year. We sort and place the items in flats to be displayed during the sale. Items range from 75¢ – $2.00. We also apply for various grants from the regional library group and from the state Friends organization. We give books to the veterans hospital in Topeka, the surrounding jails, and any teacher who wants them.
